The only reason Facebook is not a parasitic, life-infecting cockroach that cannot be stopped short of a nuclear winter and Hell on Earth is because it occasionally allows people to actually learn something about wha tthe fuck is going on around them, in ways that controlled-information-dispensation places, such as newspapers, television media and even news-focused websites, do not. This is one of those times.
Occupy Wallstreet was first spread through Facebook and Tumblr. I remember the first time hearing about it on television (I still hadn’t heard about it on a reputable news outlet) and that was on the Daily Show. Hand-held shaky cam videos is all I’ve ever seen of that — of police beating the shit out of, paper spraying, fucking around. That happened here, not far from where I’m sitting, writing this out right now.
This, however, is happening quite a bit away. I don’t think it’s much different though. It’s a link to an article about the protests going on in Istanbul right now. A quick scan of AOL and Yahoo reveal nothing about it — just articles about which star wore the same dress best, tornado casualties, critiques of Will Smith’s new movie. No information about Istanbul.
A couple of British outlets are covering this. From what I’ve seen three including the Daily Beast, BBC. (After more careful searching, there are some news outlets reporting on this. Go read them. I don’t believe any Turkish news groups are.)
I don’t know a lot about Istanbul. But I would not have known about this at all if it weren’t for a friend on Facebook. Same with Occupy Wallstreet and the Treyvon Martin case (which, like Occupy, happened very close to where I was when it occured). Information dispensation devices aren’t flawed or bad but they feed you what you ask for.
You ask for quippy hosts interviewing washed up actors about movies that should not be made. You asked them how to make a perfect omelet and they obliged. You asked them not to be upset, to be guarded from the world, and they happily cover your eyes and whisper that it’ll all be all right.
People though, individual people, do not care about it “all being all right.” Individual people do not care if you get through breakfast without gagging; you shouldn’t be able to finish your meal. You should know what’s going on around you. In a world where the biggest news story is Casey Anthony, and the passing of the NDAA gets no coverage, you need someone to beat you over the head with the truth and make you choke on it.
If you sit there, doe-eyed and complacent, things like this will happen everywhere. Your freedoms will be stripped away, your children will be aborted, your future will be raped and you’ll be smiling because the host on your favorite news channel just made a perfect grapefruit cocktail.
Everyone claps. Not with a bang or with a whimper but with thunderous applause.
This is not the world you asked for but you need to not cover your eyes. These are the things that are going on. News media feeds you what you want to know and all you ask is to be entertained and to have the truth thrown in with a mixture of bullshit about cute squirrels, weather and how . News scares you because it’s real. Well, fuck you.
“If anyone in this shit-hole City gave two tugs of a dead dog’s cock about the Truth, this wouldn’t be happening.” Spider Jerusalem says that in Transmetropolitan, watching the riots that happen below him. Riots that no one cares about, riots that people tune out, riots that people helped make by their complacency, riots that the police do and “you let them.” Don’t let them. I don’t see how the fuck this is any different from that. Cops beating the shit out of people who did not care about anything except for being able to live and breathe and not get fucked to death by people in authority. That’s who is being beat on. That’s how this works: if you’re small or weak and you say no, you’re ground to fucking dust. And the news doesn’t care about you.
Summer getaway. Ben and Jerry’s new Ice Cream. No mention of the kids — and yes, they’re kids, like you, like your own kids, like your family; don’t picture some fuckers in another country who talk differently than you; think of your son or daughter with pepper spray in her eyes just because she tried to stand up, peacefully, for what she believed was right — getting fucked, shat on by police. No mention of anything scary, anything that can move you. Not here, not where you pay for it.
Imagine that’s your kid.
Imagine this is your country.
Imagine you do care.
Spread the word; don’t eat the shit they feed you. Stop letting them. Don’t let anyone get away with this — not the police for doing it, not the news for not reporting it. Hold those fuckers by the balls and squeeze.
